REIMAGINING THE FUTURE CONFERENCE:
Shifting the Status Quo

August 5th & 6th, 2023 | Online

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

With the current state of our world, it can be frustrating not to not see actionable change. Our globally developed systems are failing both us and the planet. If we want to reach the 2023 agenda, the status quo must be shifted. At this year's ReImagining the Future Conference, we are questioning our current systems, and discussing how we can disrupt the social norms on multiple scales for a more sustainable, equitable world.

Over two full days of virtual panels and workshops, ReImagine17 invites you to join in on conversations and activities with leaders of advocacy, activism and social justice. Youth will have the chance to engage with stakeholders in the nonprofit sector and other community leaders to learn from and connect with other like-minded people. Come and shift the status quo with us!

PANEL:
ReEnvisioning Sustainability for Our Local Communities

Today, over half of the world’s population live in cities. Cities that are well-planned and sustainable are essential to supporting the communities that live within them. The lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic instability, and increasing natural disasters have torn communities apart and exposed the inequities in our cities’ foundations. As our population continues to grow, we should strive for spaces that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable, increasing our current resilience and ensuring a good foundation for future generations.

This panel hosted by RE17 will touch on the themes of sustainable cities, crisis resilience and community building. Panelists will discuss the current landscape of their cities and ReEnvision approaches for more connected, resilient communities.

PANEL:
Taking Up Space in a Colonial World

Colonization and the pandemic helped design a world with little to no trust. It has become normal for non-natives or colonial individuals to flex their privilege. Non-colonial people or persons are constantly having to perform niceness while dealing with unsettling often hostile shared spaces riddled with micro-aggression. How can someone who has privilege within society hold space or feel comfortable with someone is Indigenously sovereign?

This panel will focus on the topic of fear, and the struggles Indigenous people face. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own experiences as individuals of the land, and what can be done to shift the status quo around creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.

WORKSHOP:
A Trip Into The Climateverse: ReImagining
The
Future Today

The Climateverse is a news media platform reporting the news live from an alternate reality, where humanity is actually taking decisive and transformational action on our intersecting crises of climate change and social justice. As a challenge to the status quo of despair and helplessness, the Climateverse seeks to transform our collective climate anxiety into hope as we focus on the kinds of changes we could make today, to claim more sustainable, resilient, inclusive and just futures for all.

In this workshop, participants will be invited to embark on their own personal journeys into the Climateverse by choosing a current real world news story or topic to radically reimagine. Using the story presented as inspiration, participants will craft their own Climateverse stories (500-800 words), in groups or individually, that they will be able to share with the group and later submit to be published on the platform.

WORKSHOP:
ReImagining Our Future: Youth Perspectives in Policy-making

The McGill Youth Advisory Delegation (MYAD) is a student-led organization holding consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council). Their mission is to amplify the voices of youth in policy-making and prioritize youth-centered policies in international politics at the United Nations. Their workshop will be a Policy Jam, where diverse youth stakeholders can creatively contribute to policy making and collectively address challenges. They will provide attendees with the opportunity to identify issues in our current global systems relating to inequality, global health, and climate change, and guide them through the process of developing policy recommendations that target these issues. Through this workshop, they aim to provide attendees with an understanding of the role youth can play in contributing to sustainable development in the global social, political, economic, and ecological spheres.

REMOBILIZING YOUTH PROGRAM X REIMAGINING THE FUTURE CONFERENCE

The ReMobilizing Youth Program calls upon youth across Canada who are critical and creative thinkers to create networks of social change. The program supports diverse, passionate youth with a national community of practice and equips them with the tools they need to advocate for sustainability and social justice within their communities. The ReMobilizing Youth Program’s “Mobilizers” attend weekly virtual workshops throughout July and early August which seek to reimagine current frameworks of sustainability and advocacy to reflect the values of youth of today. Drawing upon the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the ReMobilizing Youth Program evaluates and critiques oppressive frameworks of development and guides youth to imagine alternatives and design innovative projects for their communities.

At the end of the ReMobilizing Youth program, Mobilizers are tasked with developing a brand new project of their own that fulfills a gap in their community, inspired by the ReMobilizing Youth Program workshop series. As a final project, the Mobilizers will showcase their learning and development throughout the program and prove their skills in a fun and engaging presentation and pitch that will inspire young people like them to reimagine the landscape of development and community activism.

The Mobilizers will host panels on both days of the ReImagining the Future Conference where they will present their project pitches to an audience of Advisors to receive insightful feedback in real time. The Advisors are people from multiple different backgrounds who have experience in community engagement and youth initiatives themselves. Attendees will be able to hear the Mobilizers’ pitches and see the feedback process in real time.
